ABA Therapy

The science behind Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy

The thing that makes all children so special, so magical, is that no two are the same. No two have exactly the same skills, needs, or motivation, and children with autism are no different. That’s why we create an individual treatment plan for each of our clients. As we get to know your child and identify his or her naturally occurring motivation, we can identify the best opportunities for an effective and enjoyable learning experience. That’s the beauty of ABA, it’s about how all humans “work” what motivates us, and…what doesn’t.

As the leading evidence-based therapy for children with autism, ABA provides a structure for therapy with our clients. BCPS works within this framework, providing flexibility to best meet the needs of each unique client. We offer a wide range of services, all of which are rooted in a data-driven, research-supported, team approach to care.

  • Comprehensive and Focused Treatment Programs

We provide ABA therapy for individuals across the autism spectrum, focused treatment programs to address a limited number of key functional skills, and comprehensive treatment programs to address broader challenges. Ultimately, the child and his or her needs define the approach.

  • A Team Approach to Care - In the Clinic and at Home

At BCPS, therapy is primarily an individualized one-to-one experience, backed by an entire team of professionals, all focused on helping our clients learn and grow. Our Board Certified Behavior Analyst creates goals and milestones that define the therapy. Behavior Technicians then, provide these therapy services in both home and clinic settings. Ultimately this team, unified around each client, is driven to provide the most supportive, informed treatment programming for every client.

  • Nurturing and Fun

Sometimes therapy looks like a play session, sometimes it looks like a study session, and oftentimes it looks like a little of both! Our sessions pair rewarding activities and feedback with the hard work of developing emerging skills so that therapy sessions are overall a nurturing, rewarding experience.

 Common Questions About ABA Therapy

  • ABA focuses on the principles that explain how and why behaviors take place. Through decades of research, the field of behavior analysis has developed many techniques for increasing useful behaviors that facilitate growth across areas of everyday life such as academic, communication and social skills, and reducing behaviors that may cause harm or interfere with learning.

  • New clients are evaluated using autism specific assessments that show their areas of strengths and help determine areas for further development. Our Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) and Psychologists work collaboratively to develop an individualized treatment program with goals that are unique to your child. Your child's therapy sessions are one-on-one sessions with a highly-trained behavior technician or BCBA who implements research-proven techniques to achieve growth toward his/her goals. We take extensive data at each session that you have access to through our parent portal. We will hold regular treatment team meetings with you to go over what the data shows us and to continually develop your child's program to adapt to his/her growing and changing needs.

  • ABA therapy is covered by many insurance policies, however North Carolina does not currently require that all policies pay for ABA therapy. We provide a complimentary benefit verification for all new referrals who choose to provide insurance information. Behavior Consultation & Psychological Services accepts most major insurance carriers and is in-network with BCBSNC and many of its affiliates, Optum Behavioral Health (as part of United Healthcare), Trillium Health Resources, Cardinal Innovations, and Sandhills Center. We accept medicaid, private insurance and self-pay clients.
